60-second style: Ivory and off-white waistcoats

60-second style: Ivory and off-white waistcoats

Often overlooked for formalwear ensembles, the family of cream and off-white waistcoats are actually fantastic options for weddings and formal events. Whereas most people like to display some colour in their waistcoat - and rightly so since it is the biggest piece of sartorial real estate after the morning suit - opting for a cream style has its advantages.

Contrast

Whether you decide upon a traditional black morning coat, or a charcoal or navy variety, the cream waistcoat gives you contrast. It makes the colour of the suit cloth stand out and also provides a crisp clean canvas for your tie to do all the talking. For those of you with very pale complexions, we would suggest you stay clear of white/cream styles, but for those with darker skin tones it can be a fabulous option.

Formality

Just as in the Regency era, the ivory waistcoat was the preferred option for evening occasions as it was deemed the smartest and most sophisticated, hence why white-tie events are the most formal today. Thus an ivory waistcoat when paired with an off-white tie and pocket square makes up for one of the few times we would ever suggest matching that trio.

Morning suits

While the ivory waistcoat looks stunning against the stark contrast of a black morning coat, it is also equally well adapted with the other variants, those being navy and charcoal morning suits. With the charcoal especially, the ivory waistcoat lends the whole ensemble a soft and sophisticated finish that can be punctuated with a bold tie and pocket square if one wishes. With our navy Furlong morning coat, the ivory waistcoat really helps to bring out the nuances of blue tones.
