Demystifying Men’s Dress Codes: How to Dress for Royal Ascot

The Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot remains one of the few places where dress still carries real weight. It is not simply a matter of meeting the code, but of understanding how to wear it well. Morning dress, when properly chosen, should feel assured rather than theatrical, elegant rather than overworked. That balance of tradition, proportion and personal judgement is what has long defined the occasion.

As Official Menswear Licensee for the Royal Enclosure, Favourbrook is especially well placed to guide gentlemen through those finer points. Since 1990, we have specialised in occasionwear for the grander dates in the British social calendar, with a particular understanding of morning dress, waistcoats and the details that lift an ensemble from correct to considered.

Morning Dress, Done Properly

The foundation of Royal Enclosure dressing is, of course, the morning suit. Black remains the most traditional route, particularly when paired with cashmere stripe or houndstooth trousers, and there is good reason it has endured. It is formal, flattering and entirely in keeping with the occasion. For those who prefer something slightly softer, a charcoal grey morning suit offers a quieter kind of elegance, with a more unified look that feels particularly polished. Our navy morning suit, approved by Royal Ascot and the first navy suit permitted in the Royal Enclosure, offers a more contemporary alternative while remaining fully respectful of the code.

Each has its own character, but the principle is the same. The aim is not to look flamboyant, nor to disappear into the crowd, but to strike the right note. Royal Ascot rewards men who dress with confidence, restraint and a clear sense of occasion.

Fit Matters More Than Flourish

A morning suit should feel composed from every angle. The coat should sit cleanly through the shoulder, shape the waist without pulling, and fall neatly through the tails, which should finish around the back of the knee. Sleeves should be proportioned to reveal a little shirt cuff, while the trousers should sit high on the waist and fall with a clean line through the leg. Braces are not simply a traditional flourish here. They help the trousers sit as they should, and ensure the waistcoat covers the waistband properly.

These are small points, but they make an enormous difference. When the cut is right, the whole ensemble feels settled. That is why a fitting matters. At our Pall Mall store, our team works through each element carefully, helping clients arrive at a result that feels both correct and effortless.

The Waistcoat Is Where Personality Lives

If the morning coat provides the structure, the waistcoat is where a gentleman has room to say something about himself. This is where Favourbrook has long had a distinct point of view. Our waistcoat collection is among the largest in the world, spanning single- and double-breasted styles in linen, wool and silk blends, with colours and patterns chosen to bring individuality without straying into novelty.

A double-breasted waistcoat is the more formal option, lending weight and presence to the look, especially in softer pastel tones such as sky blue, pale green or soft pink. A single-breasted waistcoat offers a little more freedom, particularly if you want to introduce subtle pattern or texture. Either way, the guiding principle is judgement. A good waistcoat should bring light, depth and character to morning dress, not overwhelm it.

Ties, Pocket Squares and the Finishing Details

The finishing details deserve more thought than they are often given. A tie should provide contrast and draw the eye upward, framing the face against a crisp white shirt. Polka dots, neat geometrics and classic woven patterns tend to work particularly well, offering interest without appearing too busy. If the waistcoat is soft in tone, a slightly richer tie can help anchor the look.

The pocket square should complement rather than match exactly. A little contrast is usually better than too much coordination. Silk works beautifully, but the key is balance. Royal Enclosure dressing is at its best when each element feels considered, but nothing feels forced.

Why Favourbrook for Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot is not an occasion for guesswork, which is precisely why experience matters. As Official Menswear Licensee for the Royal Enclosure, Favourbrook brings both a close understanding of the code and a long-standing expertise in how to wear it with ease. Since 1990, we have specialised in formalwear and occasion dressing, helping gentlemen navigate weddings, black tie and morning dress with confidence rather than uncertainty.

That is what sets Royal Ascot dressing apart. It is not merely about complying with the rules, but about understanding where to keep things classic, where to introduce personality and how to arrive at a look that feels wholly appropriate to the occasion. From morning coats and trousers to waistcoats, ties and the finer details, Favourbrook offers the pieces and the guidance to get it right.

If you are dressing for the Royal Enclosure this season, we recommend arranging a fitting at our Pall Mall store or contacting menswear@favourbrook.com to speak with the team.
