Dressing With Flair: The Artist Jacket

Dressing With Flair: The Artist Jacket

The chore jacket, originally known as bleu de travail, is a timeless menswear staple with roots in late 19th-century France. Born in Mont Saint Michel, it was designed for blue-collar workers like railroad laborers, offering durability, a lightweight feel, and practical pockets for tools and essentials. Crafted from tough cotton drill or moleskin in a signature ‘hydrone’ blue, it was built to endure daily wear. American workers later adopted it, using denim or canvas, cementing its status as a workwear icon.

Favourbrook’s Artist Jackets reimagine this classic with a modern twist, particularly in the case of two flamboyant iterations featuring vibrant floral prints. Made from luxurious cotton velvet, the artist jacket swaps the traditional collar for a refined Nehru style, finished with antique brass buttons and a single braid loop on the cuff. Three jet pockets maintain its clean lines, with a shorter finish than the classic chore jacket, while a midnight paisley lining and three internal pockets add undeniable sophistication.

Versatile yet stylish, this jacket pairs well with black dress trousers and an open dress shirt for a formal evening look that isn't black tie. It can also be layered over a fine-gauge roll-neck jumper and velvet trousers for a more relaxed aesthetic that is ideal for smart-casual evening events such as informal dinners.
