The Ladies' Nehru Jacket

The Ladies' Nehru Jacket

Few garments blend cultural heritage with contemporary sophistication quite like the Nehru jacket. Named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's visionary first Prime Minister, this iconic piece first gained prominence in the 1940s and 1950s during India's post-independence era. Rooted in traditional Indian attire such as the achkan and sherwani, the Nehru jacket was Nehru's go-to ensemble, symbolising simplicity, nationalism, and a departure from colonial influences. Its clean lines and mandarin collar quickly caught on, becoming a staple for political figures and everyday style icons alike.

By the 1960s, the Nehru jacket crossed oceans, captivating the West amid the counterculture movement. Celebrities like the Beatles embraced it, infusing it with a rock 'n' roll edge, while its hip-length cut and button-up front offered a fresh alternative to Western suits. Traditionally a men's garment, it embodied understated power - tailored yet unpretentious, versatile for formal and casual settings. Fast-forward to today, and the Nehru jacket has evolved, transcending gender norms while retaining its timeless appeal.

This season we have reinterpreted the Nehru jacket for women in the form of our Camden jacket. Loosely inspired by the Nehru's signature stand collar and structured silhouette, the Camden elevates the design with a flattering waisted fit that finishes just above the mid-thigh, creating an elongating, empowering look. Crafted in London from luxurious signature fabrics like silk velvet, cotton velvet, and linen, it features fabric-covered buttons, working pockets, and cuffs for both functionality and flair.

What makes the Camden jacket an excellent choice for smart women at semi-formal day and evening events? Its versatility is unmatched. Pair it with tailored trousers for a daytime business luncheon, exuding confidence and poise, or layer it over a sleek dress for an evening cocktail party, where the plush velvet catches the light and turns heads. The mandarin collar frames the face beautifully, while the tailored cut flatters all body types, offering comfort without sacrificing style. In a sea of predictable blazers, the Camden stands out as a statement of refined individuality. Whether you're attending a wedding, gallery opening, or corporate gathering, the Camden jacket empowers you to channel Nehru's legacy with a feminine twist.
