The Register: Festive Issue

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas... Central London is absolutely jam-packed with tourists, tractors, and tacky decorations, meanwhile in the countryside we are harbouring more turkeys than tourists, and have a distinct lack of tractors. The tacky tinsel seems to have spread like Japanese knotweed. Nevertheless, city and country folk alike appear to be ready for a fortnight of over-indulgence, family bickering, and James Bond re-runs.

We'll be doing it in consummate style of course. There's nothing better than getting dressed up for Christmas, whether that be a dinner jacket for a cocktail evening on Christmas Eve, or a velvet smoking jacket for a post-lunch prandial on Christmas Day. And for the ladies, why not slip into a black velvet lounge jacket to host friends on Boxing Day? Chic, sophisticated, and sets the tone for New Year's Eve!

Have a Roxy Christmas

One sartorial inspiration we always refer to when it comes to menswear this time of year is the impeccable Bryan Ferry. Ferry’s style transcends fashion trends because it is rooted in timeless principles: elegance, individuality, and a touch of drama. He reminds us that great style is not just about what you wear but how you carry it. Whether dressed in a classic tuxedo or a casual knit sweater, Ferry’s aesthetic always conveys control and charisma, and thus is a good mood board for a stylish Xmas!

Who's The Smoke Show?

One of our favourite menswear pieces to bring out at Christmas parties - especially when you're hosting at home - is the smoking jacket. Whether in single-breasted or double-breasted format, the velvety allure and statesmanlike silhouette never fails to create a formal yet decidedly fun aesthetic, adding just the right amount of drama to your ensemble. We wrote an extensive guide to smoking jackets here so if you are not yet an advocate, or would like to graduate from acolyte to expert then it's well worth a read!

Sequin Surprise

A fun and beautiful way to dress with festive spirit is with sequins. Who doesn't love a bit of sparkle?! This season we have produced a stunning oyster waistcoat with matching lounge trousers, featuring elegant sequin detailing that really brings the pieces to life. The set is a sophisticated eveningwear alternative to a dress, offering a modern tailored approach to smart womenswear. Both the waistcoat and trouser silhouettes are incredibly flattering and can be paired with one of our short lounge jackets or an elegant black tuxedo jacket. See how we've styled it in this journal.

If You Think Your Family's Bad...

Christmas can be a stressful time, what with many of your blood relatives and in-laws often making a pilgrimage to your home only to remind you why you decided to move to Newfoundland all those years ago. As inescapable as your family are, they're not all bad. (Surely?) Getting multiple generations around one big table, plying them with alcohol, copious amounts of meat, and then threatening them with 4 hours of charades can often lead to combustible consequences, or at the very least some smirk-inducing repartee. But if you really want to know what a feud looks and sounds like, then Longreads writer Chris Wheatley has compiled a brilliant reference piece covering some of the greatest, most pernicious musical feuds to have ever gone down, such as Miles Davis's legendary feud with Wynton Marsalis. So when you've had quite enough of your sister-in-law's tales of maternal perfection, give it a read and realise that actually, all is not that bad!
