Understanding Our Different Morning Coats

Understanding Our Different Morning Coats

At Favourbrook, we have long been admired for the superior craftsmanship of our morning coats. In every seasonal collection, we create a charcoal, navy and, grey style, and a number of different black versions. The differences in colour are quite obvious and need no explanation, but we are often asked about the variances in our black morning coats, of which there are five this season, each with a slightly different weight of cloth, or nuances in the details. We've compiled a short guide to help you understand the differences so you can make an educated choice.

Black Chesham Wool Morning Coat - Ascot

Made specifically for our Ascot collection, the Black Chesham wool morning coat is the lightest weight of all our black morning coats, constructed from a 10-11oz worsted twill, but still with a traditional handle to the cloth. With Ascot being peak summer in the UK, this cloth is perfect as it will keep you as cool as can be on even the hottest of days.

Black Seaton Cashmere Wool Morning Coat

Crafted from 100% recycled cashmere, the Seaton morning coat has a fantastic soft flannel handle. It looks darker in colour than its counterparts due to the density of cloth. Beautifully elegant, it is the most luxurious and elegant of coats. Cashmere has the unique characteristic of being both warm and breathable, alongside having excellent moisture wicking properties, so this morning coat is perfect for both spring and autumn events.

Black Windsor Herringbone Wool Morning Coat

The Windsor Herringbone morning coat is the perfect all-round morning coat, and a suitable weight for any time of the year. The fine herringbone pattern not only gives structure and durability to the cloth but the pattern also diffuses the light to give the fabric a softer look.

Black Windsor Herringbone Wool Morning Coat with trim

As above but with silk trim. Although less common the silk trim is a traditional detail favoured by King Charles. It sets the morning coat apart from the crowd.

Black Hampton Barathea Wool Morning Coat

The Barathea wool morning coat uses a heavier winter-weight fabric, providing a very formal, jet black look with an excellent drape. It's perfect for a city or evening wedding when you want to look super sharp.

Grey Norfolk Herringbone Wool Morning Coat

Part of the Royal Ascot Collection, this traditional grey morning coat features a subtle herringbone weave and can be worn with matching trousers to make an elegant two-piece. The herringbone pattern gives structure and durability to the cloth, as well as diffusing the light to give the fabric a softer look.

Navy Ascot Wool Morning Coat

Accompanying the Grey Norfolk coat in the Ascot Collection is this morning suit in a very matt dark navy wool. It is the first navy morning suit of its kind to be allowed into the Royal Enclosure, as previously no navy suits were permitted. Lightweight in construction for summer occasions, the fabric also has a small amount of stretch for superior comfort (which comes in handy when one is running to the winners' enclosure!). It is a more minimal, modern take on the traditional morning suit.

Charcoal Windsor Herringbone Wool Morning Coat

The Charcoal Windsor Herringbone morning coat is made in a beautiful dark grey wool that almost has the appearance of a soft black, the weight is suitable for any time of the year. The fine herringbone pattern not only gives structure and durability to the cloth but the pattern also diffuses the light to give the fabric a softer look.

All of our jackets feature peak lapels with a flower loop buttonhole on the left lapel, a four-button working cuff, with a pair of ‘jigger buttons’ on the front and a pair of buttons on the back waist. Inside the jackets are lined with Favourbrook’s signature midnight paisley, with two inside breast pockets and a hidden pocket in the tails (useful for carrying the ring in if you're a best man!).
