Georgette: a stylish delicacy

Georgette: a stylish delicacy

Think lightweight, floaty dresses and you’ll typically conjure up images of summer linen maxi-dresses and boho styles, but the winter months also provide plenty of opportunities to wear delicate and playful fabrics, none more so than silk Georgette, a sheer, lightweight, dull-finished crêpe fabric. Originally made from silk - which is what we use here at Favourbrook - Georgette comprises highly twisted yarns which gives it its characteristic crinkly surface. Similar to chiffon, albeit with less lustre, Georgette has a wonderful bounce to it, coming to life on the wearer with a youthful verve to it. Even to the touch, one can immediately get the sense of Georgette’s ‘spring’ thanks to those highly twisted silk yarns.

This season we have created a number of dress styles that highlight the finer characteristics of this wonderfully playful and feminine fabric.

The fabric takes its name from Madame Georgette de la Plante, a renowned dressmaker who lived at the beginning of the 20th century. De la Plante was a contemporary of Coco Chanel, and was renowned for creating wonderful dresses and gowns with a distinctive net finish, hence why the fabric takes her name. These days, Georgette is most commonly used in bridal gowns, but you needn’t be heading up the aisle to wear it. This season we have created a number of dress styles that highlight the finer characteristics of this wonderfully playful and feminine fabric.

First among them is our Serena dress, which this season we have produced in four colours: glacier grey, black, midnight blue and a vibrant geranium orange. This classic scoop neck dress is expertly cut from luxurious silk georgette, featuring a full circle skirt with a satin belt and three-quarter-length sleeves. It’s a beautifully minimal and pared-back style that is versatile enough to wear from day to night.

A slightly more formal style is our Louisa dress, which is cut in a silk tunic style and features a full-length blouson sleeve gathered into cuffs with fabric-covered button details. The great thing about Georgette is how well it takes dye, really bringing out the nuances in the colour tones. Hence why we’ve create the Louisa dress in a wonderfully rich navy, alongside a fabulously vibrant burgundy version that won’t fail to turn heads. Finally, we have also used Georgette to produce our very chic, Parisian-style Jemima dress that features a deep v-neck line and three-quarter-length sleeves, and our Palazzo pants which are so comfortable you’ll want to wear them absolutely everywhere!
