Navy or charcoal? Two options for a more modern morning suit

Navy or charcoal? Two options for a more modern morning suit

When it comes to formal weddings or any formalwear occasion that requires a morning suit, the traditional (and most widely worn) style is a classic black morning coat and cashmere stripe trousers. And a fine look it is too. The striped pattern of the trousers nicely break up the long black silhouette of the morning coat, and when you factor in a crisp white shirt, the pop of colour from an elegant waistcoat and the flash of a tie and pocket square, you have a very sophisticated and timeless look. But saying all that, there are a couple of other options, slightly more modern, that will look every bit as stunning as the traditional ensemble.

While you can switch the cashmere stripe trousers with either herringbone or houndstooth, to really stand out from the crowd we would suggest opting for the increasingly popular navy or charcoal grey morning suit. While the former has not been widely adopted (partly because Royal Ascot did not allow it in the Royal Enclosure until last year!), is it fantastic alternative to traditional morning dress and has become an excellent option for grooms thanks to the rich deep navy tone that pairs beautifully with a wide range of waistcoat and tie tones, making it very easy to bring together a well-rounded ensemble fit for the occasion. It works incredibly well as a contrast to lighter pastel tones, making it ideal for summer weddings, or for a slightly more formal look, you can pair it with a matching navy waistcoat to create a 3-piece.

As for the details, we've cut the morning coat in an elegant lightweight wool cloth so it is very breathable. It is cut away at the front with the tails breaking on the back of the knee. The jacket features peak lapels with a flower loop button hole on the left lapel, four button working cuffs with a pair of 'jigger buttons' at the front waist and a second pair on the back waist. Inside the jacket is finished with Favourbrook's signature midnight paisley lining with two in breast pockets and a hidden pocket in the tail.

The other option, as mentioned earlier, is the charcoal morning suit, which is a favourite of HRH the Prince of Wales. Given the lighter tone, it's also a great option for summer weddings and similar to the navy morning suit. We've used the very same slim-fitting silhouette for the charcoal style as for the navy morning coat, creating a very elegant shape. And also like the navy, the charcoal tone provides a very nice neutral canvas against which to contrast bold waistcoats or more muted pastel tones. Unlike the navy morning suit however, you can very easily wear the classic cashmere stripe trousers if you prefer.

As ever, we would thoroughly recommend that you come down to our flagship store at 16-17 Pall Mall to try on both styles with a variety of different waistcoat and tie combinations to ensure you. find the perfect morning dress ensemble for your wedding or formalwear occasion.
