The Essential Sartorial Accessories

The Essential Sartorial Accessories

When it comes to dressing for a formal occasion, most of the column inches are given over to tuxedo styles, velvet jackets, and such like, while formalwear accessories are often overlooked, or worse, thrown in the perennial Christmas gift guide. At Favourbrook, we are not only extremely proud of our menswear accessories, but we also understand their significance as a vital ingredient in the recipe for sophisticated style. We actually began life selling waistcoats before we started making formalwear and tailoring so we naturally hold the garment in high esteem. With one of, if not the biggest waistcoat collections in the world, we recognise that it is often the details that make a man's style stand out.

Besides our waistcoats, we have designed elegant collections of everything one can think of to embellish a great tuxedo, smoking jacket or suit, from Italian silk ties and cummerbunds to velvet bow ties, Prince Albert slippers and cufflinks...

Bow Ties

A classic bow tie adds an unmistakable touch of sophistication to eveningwear. Its symmetry and understated charm have made it a staple for formal events since it was popularised by French fashions in the 18th century. At Favourbrook, we have an eclectic collection of silk and velvet bow ties, from geometric patterned styles to classic black silk satin options for traditional black tie.

Cummerbunds

A cummerbund not only enhances the sleek look of a tuxedo but also serves a practical purpose by covering the waist and hiding shirt creases. Originating from British military dress in colonial India, it provides an element of polish while creating a seamless, refined silhouette for formal occasions. It's also a useful device for incorporating a swathe of bold colour in your outfit, although a classic black silk cummerbund is still the go-to option for traditionalists.

Ties

The necktie has evolved from cravats worn by Croatian soldiers in the 17th century, symbolising prestige and refinement. Today, it remains a versatile and essential part of suiting, allowing men to express personal style through patterns, colours, and textures, while maintaining the structure and sophistication of formal attire. We have a vast collection of Italian silk styles, as well as knitted ties for a contemporary look.

Waistcoats

A waistcoat adds dimension and elegance to suiting and eveningwear, emphasising structure and polished detail. First introduced by King Charles II in the 17th century, waistcoats have evolved but continue to enhance formalwear, whether in classic black tie or layered under a morning coat, adding distinction and depth. They are also a vastly underrated dancing accessory, too, because when you remove your jacket to throw some shapes, the waistcoat gives you a much smarter look than if you were just wearing a shirt.

Prince Albert Slippers

Named after Prince Albert, these velvet slippers are a luxurious choice for evening footwear. Their refined velvet design and in some cases, subtle embroidery, make them ideal for formal evening events, bringing a hint of aristocratic charm to a suit or tuxedo while adding comfort and an air of timeless elegance. They are a confident alternative to plain black Oxfords, and look fantastic with velvet smoking jackets.

Braces

Braces ensure trousers sit perfectly, maintaining the silhouette of a formal outfit without the need for a belt. They first emerged in the 19th century as a functional accessory but quickly became a symbol of sophistication, giving structure and old-world charm to a smart ensemble. They had a spike in popularity in the late 80s with the release of Wall Street, in which Michael Douglas's character Gordon Gecko was a fan, but fell out of favour more recently as menswear became more casual. Hence wearing a pair these days really makes you stand out from the crowd.

Pocket Squares

Adding a pocket square to a suit is an effortless way to introduce colour, texture, or pattern. Its origins can be traced to the decorative handkerchiefs of the 14th century, and today, it remains a favoured accessory for stylish men looking to add flair and sophistication to their formalwear. Although taking up just a small amount of sartorial real estate, don't underestimate the potential of a great pocket square to completely elevate your look.
