A Ladies' Style Guide To A Weekend In The Countryside

A Ladies' Style Guide To A Weekend In The Countryside

The invitation says simply "to stay", which in the British countryside means four dress codes, a sense of humour, and some ibuprofen. A weekend at a smart house runs to a rhythm older than any of its guests - informal dinner on Friday after the race up from London, outdoor pursuits through Saturday, smart dinner and dancing that same night, and a restorative breakfast on Sunday that nobody dresses for. It is less a weekend than a triathlon with better catering. Here's how to organise your overnight bag...

Friday Night: The Informal Dinner
"Informal", in the country, does not mean what it means in London: no black tie, but no jeans either - the sartorial equivalent of a firm handshake. The Camden Jacket in Iberian Wine cotton velvet is made for exactly this: a Nehru collar, fabric-covered buttons and working jetted pockets, cut in London. Wear it over a simple silk dress or with cigarette trousers, and let the velvet do the charming.

Saturday: The Pursuits
Saturday belongs to the estate. Tweed, waxed cotton, wellies and a good hat, none of which we would presume to improve upon. The British weather will not consult the itinerary. For those who don't shoot or ride, staying out the house is no license to slob out. Dressed-down elegance comes by way of pairing velvet with denim for a thoroughly modern aesthetic that won't go without compliments.

Saturday Night: Dinner And Dancing
Now we come to it. Black or midnight georgette palazzo pants - fluid, floor-sweeping, made for a hallway with Canalettos on one wall and mounted antlers on the other - with the bias-cut camisole in crepe satin and a velvet lounge jacket on top. For the walk across the gravel or to fraternise with the devilish smokers, the Long Swing Coat in claret cotton velvet, maintains warmth with sophistication. Then the palazzos earn their keep on the dance floor.

Sunday: The Recovery
Breakfast is served at ten and nobody is at their best. The dress code is cashmere, flat shoes, serve with banter or sheepishness, depending on how your evening went. Take your coffee in the conservatory, admire your host's ancestors, and don't stretch out your stay for lunch, which will be leftovers for the leftovers. That said, pack one more outfit than the itinerary demands - the best country weekends always run over.
