Dress Like A King: the Grey Morning Suit

Dress Like A King: the Grey Morning Suit

When it comes to formal weddings or any formalwear occasion that requires a morning suit, the most widely worn style is the classic black morning coat and cashmere stripe trousers. The striped pattern of the trousers nicely break up the long black silhouette of the morning coat, and when you factor in a crisp white shirt, the pop of colour from an elegant waistcoat, and the flash of a tie and pocket square, you have a very sophisticated and timeless look. But that's not the only morning suit configuration.

King Charles' favoured morning suit has always been the grey three-piece variety. His, which he had made by Anderson & Sheppard in 1984, is quite a light grey tone, but you can find grey styles that are significantly darker. Here at Favourbrook, we have opted for somewhere in between, producing a mid-tone charcoal two-piece morning suit from in a beautiful lightweight herringbone wool, as well as a 100% recycled cashmere morning coat, and a merino wool option, too.

Part of the new Royal Ascot collection for 2023, the grey Norfolk herringbone morning suit is a stunning example of the precision tailoring at Favourbrook. The coat is cut from pure wool in a herringbone weave, with a traditional jigger front closure and riding button. Finished with working cuffs, a buttonhole on the lapel, breast pocket, and a secret pocket in the tail of the coat, it is best worn with our matching herringbone trousers.

The grey tone makes this morning suit a great option for summer wedding. We've used the very same slim-fitting silhouette for the charcoal styles as for our traditional black morning coats, creating a very elegant shape and natural drape. The charcoal tone provides a very nice neutral canvas against which to contrast  muted pastel tones. It's especially effective if you want to project a more understated yet extremely sophisticated look. By wearing a very neutral toned waistcoat, such as a pale grey or light pastel, it allows you to inject more vibrant elements of colour or pattern elsewhere in the look. King Charles, for example, is often fond of wearing a pinstriped shirt with a white collar, together with a geometric designed tie and a vibrant boutonnière, all against the muted backdrop of his charcoal three-piece.

As ever, we would thoroughly recommend that you come down to our flagship store at 16-17 Pall Mall to try on both styles with a variety of different waistcoat and tie combinations to ensure you. If you have never given the charcoal grey style any thought then do come and try it on - you might well find it completely changes your outlook on what is possible with formalwear.
