Fantastic Formalwear for Autumn Weddings

Fantastic Formalwear for Autumn Weddings

With the best of the summer now behind us, wedding attire now shifts to a discernibly autumnal aesthetic. While we may be lucky with the odd warm day here in the UK, September through November typically call for warmer ensembles, especially if part of the day is to be outside! Where linen was the fabric of the summer, wool is most certainly the best option for autumn, being warm but also breathable. Whether you are attending a formalwear wardrobe and require a morning suit, or are heading to a wedding that demands an eveningwear look, this guide will show you exactly how to make a sartorial statement this season.

The Formal Wedding

For late autumn and winter weddings, especially in British churches which can be chilly at the best of times, we would suggest an extrafine wool or cashmere morning coat for starters, paired with our 100% merino wool striped trousers. Wool is a brilliant fabric for a number of reasons, but its temperature regulating properties being one of them. At Favourbrook, we use a lightweight merino yarn to provide the upmost comfort, since one tends to wear the morning coat as great deal during formal occasions. Nevertheless, wool being wool, it provides a great level of warmth, while also having excellent moisture-wicking properties, too.

Waistcoat choices can also be a little more eclectic in the colder months, with velvet options coming into play alongside a gamut of darker, more autumnal tones and patterns. That doesn't mean you should rule out linen waistcoats, but in general, a darker tone with the lustre of gabardine wool, silk, or velvet will look extremely sophisticated under moody skies or low light. Pastel tones may jar a little too if the bride and groom have gone for a wintry colour palette in their floral arrangements and decor. We have a vast array of waistcoat options perfect for winter weddings in our Piccadilly Arcade store and our Pall Mall flagship store so do drop by and try them on - our team would be delighted to assist you in your choice.

The Black Tie Wedding

Increasingly popular in this day and age is the black tie wedding, primarily because it has a pervasive sense of glamour and panache, and is naturally a fantastic style of dress for dinner and dancing, which let's face it, is the best bit about attending a wedding. One of the great things about autumn and winter weddings is that when it comes to black tie options, one is not limited to the classic tuxedo jacket - the world of velvet jackets also comes into play, offering a vibrant, rich, and textural alternative to the traditional options.

Both double-breasted and single-breasted styles work perfectly, offering the decadence of velvet in timeless formal silhouettes. Similarly, silk is another beautiful fabric for dinner jackets, providing a glitzy aesthetic that really stands out from the crowd. Moreover, one can also play with the style of dress shirt in order to amplify the flamboyance, notably with our frill front shirt.

The Smart Tailoring Wedding

For weddings with a lounge suit dress code, most attendees will invariably call upon a classic navy or charcoal business suit, and while there's nothing wrong with that, we think you can do better! Texture is a really effective lever to pull, which is why we're big fans of suit fabrics such as corduroy and velvet. Textural wool suits such as tweed can also be great for certain weddings but can look too informal for certain occasions so we would err towards velvet and corduroy. A slim-fit peak lapel velvet suit for example, is the perfect blend of smart, comfortable, and glamorous, and transitions well from day to night. Furthermore, investing in such a suit means you're not just buying an occasion wear piece, but something you can add to your daily tailoring wardrobe that you can break out as separates too.
