Mother Of The Bride: The Hardest Brief

The full-length styles do the most talking. The Westminster Coat arrives in Fox Brown and Dark Green Hengrave silk velvet, with Black Althorp and a Royal Blue Windsor for those who want the drama turned up rather than down. The Whitehall Coat is cut long in Dark Green Latimer, Fox Brown Caswell and two distinct Royal Blues, while the Carnaby Coat -high-necked, confidently feminine and still the boldest thing we make - comes in Prune Papavar, Rust Kew and Black Windsor silk velvet, plus a Teal Bawdsey and a Khaki Lilac Parham in silk satin for anyone whose colour instincts run further than the invitation suggests. For a cleaner, quieter statement there is the Long Swing Coat in plain Claret, Navy Mayfair or Black cotton velvet, and a Swing Coat in Black Azure Hogarth brocade woven exclusively for us.

Where a floor-length coat feels like too much for a midday ceremony, the shorter styles carry the same authority with less ceremony. The Eton Coat in Olive Morpeth, the Pimlico Coat in Pourpre Pink Bower, the Waterloo Coat in Burgundy Bees cotton velvet and the Camden Jacket in Prune Windsor all work as a considered top layer over a dress. And for the genuinely cold wedding - the December church, the Scottish castle, the marquee with optimistic heating - the Bloomsbury Coat in Brown Brockwell wool is the most practical piece of formal outerwear in the collection, and no less handsome for it.

A word on colour. Autumn does the mother of the bride an enormous favour: claret, prune, fox brown, olive and midnight read as considered rather than competitive, they photograph beautifully in flat October light, and they will never be mistaken for an attempt at the bridal palette.

Dresses

Beneath the coat, this season's dresses are cut in fabrics with quiet lustre. The Josephine Dress is the natural mother-of-the-bride choice, in silk douppion and silk shantung. The Marie Dress in Cactus Green silk douppion and the Florence Dress in Evergreen plain silk douppion both hold a crisp, sculptural line through a long day, which is exactly what you want from something that has to look as composed at seven in the evening as it did at eleven in the morning.

For movement, the Serena Circle Dress returns in autumn colours - Ox Blood, Berry, Moss, Midnight and Black silk georgette - with the same graceful swing in the skirt. And for the evening, when the coat comes off and the dancing starts, the Bella Dress in Burgundy Plum silk satin and the Camisole Dress in Emerald Saona or Black heavy crepe satin need nothing more than the right coat over the shoulders.
