Short jackets: small, but perfectly formed

Short jackets: small, but perfectly formed

Women's tailored jackets have become a standard part of the everyday wardrobe, ever since the late 19th century. In fact, much credit must go to the famous French actress and poet Sarah Bernhardt, who went by the rather glorious nickname "the Divine Sarah" (if any husbands are reading, please take note...). Bernhardt played several male roles throughout her illustrious career, including Hamlet in 1899. But even off the stage she was disposed to wearing what she called "boys clothes", namely tailored jackets and trousers. Trendsetters followed suit: where once European women would wear tailored jackets with long skirts, called costumes, for activities such as riding, archery, and walking, by 1905 they were de rigeur in Paris, London, and New York. In 1914, Coco Chanel designed a fur-trimmed jacket with a matching ankle-length skirt, which fully cemented tailored silhouettes into women's fashion.

Since then, the tailored jacket for women has taken on many different forms, in some cases identical to the male silhouette, and in others better suited for the female figure. Regardless of which you prefer, the nature of the modern jacket is irrepressibly chic, sharp and sophisticated. While our tailored eveningwear jackets conform to the classic principles of the male tuxedo jacket, our short jackets are more designed as elegant outerwear pieces that can be styled in a multitude of ways.
