What to wear to winter weddings

What to wear to winter weddings

As I write this, the sun is blazing down on a positively balmy late September day in London, which has me scratching my head somewhat because I was planning to write exclusively about the velvet jackets to wear to autumn/winter weddings. Well, I'm not going to deviate because the chances are that this weather will not continue for any meaningful amount of time, but it does remind one that this time of year can throw some curveballs into one's wardrobe.

That said, velvet is a wonderful fabric and particularly at home in the winter thanks to its rich deep pile and warming qualities. As such, it's more often than not dyed in dark tones which give the fabric a wonderful depth and luxurious finish. Not only that, it's a wonderfully tactile fabric that you can help but touch - we love the way the plush fibres feel to the hand as I'm sure everyone else does too.

All of this makes it an ideal choice for winter weddings (outlier hot September days excluded). Elegant, sophisticated, and lending any dress a textural contrast, our velvet coats this season are a wonderful choice to make a confident style statement.

One of our key pieces for this season is the collarless duster coat which we have created in a striking aubergine velvet. With its voluminous silhouette, it may be one reserved for weddings in the colder winter months, but it certainly packs a stylish punch.

The Carnaby coat is another perennial favourite, being a traditional long-line coat with a svelte silhouette perfect for creating that statuesque look. We've created two velvet styles this season, one minimal style in dark moss green that features tonal contrast piping detail and a triple-button configuration fashioned at the front. The second style is more elaborate, cut from our black Delaware silk velvet and features beautiful floral embroidery that climbs the skirt of the coat.

If one prefers the more detailed styles of velvet coat, then this season has no shortage of stunning options, incorporating a variety of floral motifs that lighten the deep tones of the velvet. Our Westminster coat is a perfect case in point, being shorter than the aforementioned styles, and embellished with delicate floral embroidery to juxtapose the dark romanticism of the velvet.

Our Swing coats also bring a more playful spirit to this versatile fabric, making them ideal wedding coats, especially the dark green Sofia silk style which has so many nuances of tone to it.

We have also fashioned our very popular Eton coat in a number of velvet styles ideal for winter weddings, including a vibrant blue Sofia silk velvet and an eye-catching fox brown tone with a re-worked bodice and tailored pockets with back button detailing.

Finally (in what is an embarrassment of winter velvet riches!) is the Therese coat in green Hamilton silk velvet, and a true showstopper at that. With subtle sophisticated black silk thread embroidery, the coat features an elegant fitted waist, cowl collar, full length sleeves and dual fabric covered buttons. The silhouette and iridescent tone makes it the ideal piece for day-to-night weddings and demands to be danced in!

We've undoubtedly missed some velvet coats off the list, so don't hesitate to come down to the Pall Mall store and explore the full collection. Like many of the exclusive fabrics we create, velvet really comes alive when you see it and feel it in the natural light so we would be delighted for you to come and try on these striking garments for yourself!
