Linen: the perfect suit fabric for Summer

Linen: the perfect suit fabric for Summer

Given that us Brits spend much of the working year clothed in a merino wool business suit, when the warmer months swing round and those heavier cloths become too much, we often find ourselves at a loss, especially when it comes to smart-casual engagements. Summer suiting is splendid and needn't be something one approaches with trepidation. Yes, the cut is softer, the fabrics lighter, the whole aesthetic less rigid and more fun - what's not to like?!

At Favourbrook, we feel there is no better summer suit than that cut from soft, lightweight Irish linen. It boasts a beautiful texture, with a slightly slubby handle on close inspection, giving the cloth wonderful nuances of tone and texture. The age-old fear of linen is that it crumples and creases easily, quickly becoming dishevelled, but that really isn't the case any more. The quality of linen has vastly improved other the years, as has the mills' ability to process it, in turn producing brilliant cloths with a wonderful structure to them. Yes, you're going to get a bit more creasing in it than you would with a cotton yarn, but really that's why you choose linen over the others - for that slightly less polished and more relaxed finish.

This season, we've created a number of different linen suiting options that are perfect for smart casual get-togethers or attending summer functions such as weddings. While each style is perfect when worn as a suit, linen blazers in muted pastel tones make excellent options for separates, making manifold your wardrobe configurations.

With a rich blue tone that brilliantly offsets other pastel tones, our Indigo Woodcroft Linen Casablanca suit is an exquisite, modern, slim-fitting style made from 100% indigo linen, and features a peak lapel with two front patch pockets, four button smoked pearl working cuffs and a single smoked pearl button at the waist. Inside, the jacket is unlined for excellent breathability and has two bound inside breast pockets and in internal ticket pocket.

For those who prefer a more muted neutral tone, the stone Chester Ebury suit is a single-breasted style with ample peak lapels and cut from a beautiful linen cloth.  With a single-button fastening, slanted pockets, and working button cuffs, it's perfect worn with a crisp white shirt and contrast tie for smart events, but even better dressed down with a Cuban collar shirt for less formal scenarios or those times when you just want to project a touch of flair.

Our Sidmouth Pink Ebury jacket is another beautiful linen option. One of the great characteristics of linen is how well it takes dyes, exemplified by this stunning powdery pink hue. The jacket is made from 100% Irish linen and features a modern peak lapel with flower button hole on the left lapel. The narrow lapels and slanted pockets help to create a svelte silhouette throughout, while the linen itself  drapes like a dream.

For more flamboyant dressers, you may want to cast your eyes upon our ivory silk and linen dinner jacket which is a stunning alternative to the linen suit. That little bit dressier, it can be paired with traditional black dress trousers for a formal look. You can of course pair it with a white marcella dress shirt and bow tie if you wish, but if the event doesn't call for such a smart dress code, then we love the idea of pairing it with a tonal linen shirt (think light tobacco), collar loose and open.
